A few years ago, I started using ING Direct as my main bank.
For those of you who aren't familiar with ING Direct, the premise is simple: One checking account that's also a savings account. $500 in credit, just in case I overdraft. It's an Internet bank, so there are only a few locations. They're part of a shared ATM network, so I have access to cash in many places for free (despite the bank not having physical locations.) There are no hidden fees, and interest is a little higher than your average bank -- though nothing special.
Well, recently, Capitol One purchased ING Direct. I'm anticipating that this is as a sign that the awesome simplicity of ING Direct is on it's way out, as the big bank starts to devour it.
This means that I'm on the market for a new bank.
Priorities for me are: free ATM accessibility in any city (international would be ideal).
What I don't need: old skool things like paper checks and a million features.
I realize Bank Simple is the likely candidate to replace ING Direct as the next awesome simple online bank, but they haven't launched yet. I'm on their beta list.
If you love your bank (ie, they haven't done things to screw you over in the last year.) My question to you is this:
What bank do you use? Why do you like it? What benefits are there?
