Idea-to-Publish Every Day

How do I get from idea to publish every day?

How do I get from idea to publish every day?

It's easy to stay in idea phase. As Derek Sivers mentions in his book Anything You Want: "To me, ideas are worth nothing unless executed. They are just a multiplier. Execution is worth millions."

So, I do my best to get from idea to execution as fast as possible.

I constantly have an abundance of ideas marinating in my brain at all times. I don't ever have a problem thinking of new ideas. Even when I was in Seattle for 5 months, which in my experience was a relatively un-stimulating place, I still had an abundance of ideas.

When I move around in the world, I more ideas find themselves in my mind. My challenge is getting to execution as fast as possible.

This is my process, from idea-to-publish every day:

  1. Write a few ideas down in a notebook. I usually do this while I'm eating breakfast, or having a cup of coffee.
  2. Open my Macbook Air, anywhere, and then start writing out the idea as quickly as possible. With the first draft? I don't worry about spelling, grammar, or even if the idea is any good. I just write.
  3. Read it, after 15-30 minutes. Do I like it? I'm my own harshest critic, so if I don't, I start over again with the next idea. Sometimes the first three paragraphs will be nonsense, and then I'll get to the heart of the idea by paragraph 4. Then it's a simple matter to delete the first three paragraphs. Or, I can always start over.
  4. I give myself a time limit. I have to publish every single day at least once, but usually twice (once to the free daily letter, and then again (with more depth) to one of my premium venues, like Evolving Your Digital Work or Get Paid to Write.) This means that I can't give up. I have to hit publish.

The pressure to hit publish keeps me on track. I don't wait for 'the perfect idea'.

Idea + execution = the only way I know if my idea will land.
